What PointTracer does with your data

PointTracer analyzes GPS activity files (GPX/FIT) that you upload. Your GPS track is sent to our backend to be parsed and auto-segmented, and the resulting session (points, segments, stats) is returned to your browser for viewing. We do not sell your data, and we do not use your GPS traces to train models unless you explicitly opt in (see "Training data" below).

What's stored, and where

  • Local storage (your browser only): your uploaded session, display preferences, and activity library are saved to your browser's local storage so you can return to them. This never leaves your device unless you explicitly export or share it.
  • Invite-link sessions: if you create a multiplayer invite link, the session data associated with that link is stored in our Postgres database so teammates can join. It persists until the link expires or is manually cleared.
  • Training data (opt-in only): if you turn on "Help improve auto-segmentation" in Settings, your manual segment corrections are stored to help improve the automatic segmentation model. This is off by default.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand product usage — things like which features get used, how sessions are uploaded, and where people get stuck. We track named product events (uploads, exports, segment edits) tied to an anonymous, randomly generated ID stored in your browser. Autocapture is off — we never record page text, form contents, or your raw GPS coordinates through analytics. Analytics only run when the app is configured with an analytics key, and are disabled entirely in local development.

Third-party services

  • MapTiler: renders the map tiles you see. Loading a map tile sends your viewport location to MapTiler, governed by their own privacy policy.
  • Strava (optional, only on builds where it's enabled): if you connect a Strava account to import activities, we request read access to your activity list via Strava's OAuth flow. Tokens are stored server-side and never sent to your browser.

Your choices

You can clear your local activity library and settings at any time from your browser's site data settings. You can disconnect Strava from within the app. If you have questions about data stored on our servers (invite-link sessions, opt-in training data), contact us and we'll help.
